Lie #1: Worship is when we talk about God.
Truth #1: Worship is when we come into the presence of God.
Theologian Fredrick Buechner states: "For many years now I have taken to going to church less and less because I find so little there of what I hunger for. It is a sense of the presence of God that I hunger for." The absolute climax of worship is being in the presence of almighty God. Psalm 100:1-2 states: Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands! Serve the Lord with gladness: Come before His presence with singing. It is one thing to talk about God, but as my friend Anthony Milas would say is a "whole nutha level" when we shout joyfully to bring about the presence of God. Show up early this week for a worship service and prepare your heart, mind and soul for God's presence, He is never late and promise you it will be life changing!
Lie #2: Good worship leaves me feeling pleased.
Truth #2: Good worship leaves God feeling pleased.
I want you to take a second and think of what type of worship is pleasing to God and back it up with scripture.................................................................... I know hard right. I took a poll from a large number of people and not one could give me a scriptural answer. Now off the top of your head you might have said.... worship from the heart, or instrumental but when it comes to stating scripture it is hard for a lot of people, in fact everyone I polled. Now that you are done Googling "worship that pleases God" I would like to tell you what I have concluded. There are actually a plethora amount of scriptures that detail different types of worship that pleases God, John 4:23-24, and Hebrews 12:28 are good places to start your study. It is however imperative that we remember we have been created to worship God, when God is at the center of it all He is most pleased. Paul said in I Corinthians 10:31 "Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." Remember worship is not about you and your preferences, it is all about glorifying God.
Lie #3: In worship, the focus in on the people on stage
Truth #3: In worship, the focus is on God
Several years ago a man went to hear Charles Spurgeon preach. The man was unable to attend the service because the building was overflowing with people so far out voices could not even be heard of those conducting the service. The man went to attended another local worship service, he left feeling self assured stating what a great worship team, what a great preacher. The next night he showed up extra early to Charles Spurgeons worship service. He left that night feeling challenged stating "oh what a savior". The focus of worship should not be on the people but rather on God!
Lie #4: Good worship happens when the music and sermon are good.
Truth #4: Good worship happens when we have a clean heart.
What instruments are being played and who is leading is not nearly as important as the attitude of those who are worshipping. Jesus Christ came to earth and lived a perfect life to die a horrible death to defeat the grave that all may have eternal life (John 3:16), that's something to worship about. If you "can't" worship properly because of who is leading or what's being played you should really take a look at yourself.
Lie #5: Worship happens in church
Truth #5: Worship happens everywhere.
John 4:20-24 states: 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.”
21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. 23But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” Don't wait till for your church to meet corporately to have worship. Make worship an everyday, everywhere thing. Worship is not the only thing but is the best of things.... it is what we were created to do!
